Living Well with Asthma: 6 Habits That Keep It Under Control

Most asthma can be controlled so well you barely notice it. Here are six practical habits — from inhaler technique to trigger control — that make the difference.

If you have asthma, here's the good news: with the right plan, the large majority of people can live completely normal, active lives — exercise, travel, sleep through the night — with few or no symptoms.

The difference between asthma that controls your life and asthma you barely notice usually comes down to a handful of everyday habits. Here are the six that matter most.

1. Use your preventer inhaler every day, even when you feel fine

This is the single biggest one. The preventer (usually a brown or purple inhaler) reduces the underlying inflammation in your airways. It works quietly in the background — which is exactly why people stop using it when they feel well, and then have a flare-up weeks later. Keep taking it as prescribed, every day.

2. Get your inhaler technique checked

Studies consistently show that a large share of people use their inhaler incorrectly, so much of the medicine never reaches the lungs. A two-minute technique check at your consultation can dramatically improve how well your inhaler works. A spacer device often helps.

3. Know and reduce your triggers

Common triggers include dust mites, pollen, smoke, pet dander, cold air, and respiratory infections. You can't avoid everything, but small changes — allergen covers on bedding, avoiding smoke, managing exposure during high-pollution days — add up.

4. Have a written asthma action plan

A simple plan tells you what to do when symptoms change: which inhaler to use, when to increase it, and the warning signs that mean you need urgent help. Having it written down removes guesswork in the moment.

5. Don't ignore your reliever usage

If you're reaching for your reliever (usually blue) inhaler more than a couple of times a week, that's a signal your asthma isn't well controlled — not a reason to just keep using it. It means your plan needs a review.

6. Keep up with reviews and vaccinations

A periodic review lets us keep your treatment at the lowest effective dose and catch problems early. Flu and other recommended vaccinations reduce the chest infections that commonly trigger flare-ups.

When to seek help

Get urgent medical attention if your reliever isn't helping, you're too breathless to speak in full sentences, or your symptoms are getting rapidly worse.
