Overview
Emphysema involves damage to the alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs, reducing the surface available for oxygen exchange and trapping air. It is a major component of COPD and is most often caused by smoking.
Care aims to ease breathlessness, prevent flare-ups and, in selected cases, evaluate advanced options such as lung volume reduction.
Common symptoms
- Progressive breathlessness, especially on exertion
- Reduced exercise capacity
- A feeling of not being able to fully empty the lungs
- Weight loss in advanced disease

Frequently asked questions
Can damaged air sacs in emphysema heal?
The structural damage cannot be reversed, but treatment can substantially relieve symptoms, improve function and slow further decline — particularly with smoking cessation and rehabilitation.
