Overview
Interstitial lung disease (ILD) describes a large group of disorders that cause inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue, leading to breathlessness and a dry cough. Causes include autoimmune disease, occupational exposure, drugs and unknown factors.
Because there are many sub-types with very different treatments, careful diagnosis using imaging, lung function and sometimes biopsy is essential.
Common symptoms
- Gradually worsening breathlessness on exertion
- Persistent dry cough
- Fatigue and reduced stamina
- Sometimes joint pains or other autoimmune features

Frequently asked questions
Is interstitial lung disease the same as pulmonary fibrosis?
Pulmonary fibrosis (scarring) is one outcome within the broader ILD family. Some ILDs are mainly inflammatory and may improve with treatment, while others are predominantly fibrotic — which is why pinning down the exact type matters.
